10 Variability

10.3 General classification

Author(s): Lorenzo Rimoldini, Berry Holl

The Gaia DR3 classification of variable objects lead to the publication of over 12 million objects distributed in 24 variability types and galaxies, with at least five FoV transits in the G band. Three tables related to variability classification are available in the Gaia archive:

  1. 1.

    vari_classifier_class_definition defines the published variability types and respective labels;

  2. 2.

    vari_classifier_definition mentions the classifier(s) used, which, in Gaia DR3, refers to the final combination of all classifiers (named nTransits:5+);

  3. 3.

    vari_classifier_result lists about 10 million classifications in the form of variability-type labels (best_class_name) and associated scores (best_class_score), for each source.

The identification of about 2.5 million galaxies and their scores was made available exclusively in the galaxy_candidates table, while the classifications of one million AGN candidates were reported additionally in the qso_candidates table, together with results of other DPAC processing modules (see Chapter 12).
